Photojournalist Shahidul Alam from Bangladesh.
2020 International Press Freedom Award to partner
Bangladeshi photojournalist Shahidul Alam receives the annual award of Committee to Protect Journalists 19 November. OsloMet has cooperating with Alam for many years.
Committee to Protect Journalists (CMJ) honours Alam and three other journalists who have been arrested or faced criminal prosecution in reprisal for their work: Mohammad Mosaed from Iran, Dapo Olorunyomi from Nigeria and Svetlana Prokopyeva from Russia.
Rector Curt Rice congratulates
Shahidul Alam started Pathshala South Asian Media Institute in 1998, and has been cooperating with the photojournalism department at OsloMet for almost twenty years.
In august 2018 OsloMet and rector Curt Rice signed an appeal demanding the release of Alam, after he was imprisoned while covering protest in Dhaka for the TV-channel Al Jazeera.
Curt Rice is pleased that Alam is recognized by CMJ, and congratulates the award winners.
"I'm glad that Shahidul Alam and his colleagues are being honored for their work and for standing up for freedom of expression, and I am proud of the many years of collaboration OsloMet has had with Alam" Rice says.
