OsloMet to offer bachelor’s degree in law from autumn 2027

The university will admit the first 150 students to the new bachelor’s programme. The programme provides a broad legal foundation and opens doors to a labour market with high demand for legal expertise.

“At the Faculty of Social Sciences, we already have a strong academic environment in law, particularly within public law, such as welfare law, but also in the legal regulation of business activity and emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence. This gives us an excellent starting point for building a high-quality legal education,” says Dean Oddgeir Osland.

On 11 March, the University Board approved the faculty’s application to establish the programme.

Responsibility for developing the programme will rest with the faculty leadership.

A natural continuation for OsloMet

Professor Julia Köhler-Olsen at the Department of Social Work and Professor Emily M. Weitzenböck at the School of Business, OsloMet, have been primarily responsible for developing the programme’s content and structure.

“OsloMet has a long tradition of professional education, and law is a natural continuation,” says Weitzenböck.

“Many programmes at OsloMet already include legal subjects and require legal competence, and the university has solid expertise in a range of public and private law fields and socially relevant topics,” says Köhler-Olsen.

The bachelor’s programme will cover all central areas of law and provide students with a broad academic foundation.

Planning a master’s degree from 2030

Establishing the bachelor’s programme is the first step towards a five‑year professional degree. A master’s programme must be accredited by Nokut (the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education), and the work on the application is underway.

“We are planning to launch a two‑year master’s degree in autumn 2030, so that students starting their bachelor’s degree in 2027 can complete the full professional programme at OsloMet,” says Osland.
