Supported by Scholars at Risk

Sociologist Oleksandra Deineko from Ukraine is a guest researcher at The Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research NIBR at OsloMet. She now receives support through Scholars at Risk.

Deineko fled the war in Ukraine and is associate professor at the School of Sociology V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

Scholars at Risk

OsloMet is a member of the international network Scholars at Risk (SAR) whose main goal is to protect threatened scholars and promote academic freedom.

OsloMet hosts one scholar per year through SAR, and from this autumn it was given to Oleksandra Deineko.

"To get support from Scholars at Risk (SAR) at OsloMet is a great opportunity for me to heal my war trauma through an active professional activity. This program helps me feel alive again," says Oleksandra Deineko.

"Scholars at Risk projects builds bridges between different cultural and academic surroundings. I can improve professional research skills and share my own research experience being in a new scientific surrounding. This program contributes to academic solidarity and supports Ukrainian scholars during the war. We feel that we are not alone," says Deineko.

Ukrainian refugees' experience in Norway

Deineko is now part of research team at NIBR, investigating Ukrainian refugees' experience in Norway. She has also given several presentations to the Norwegian authorities to provide them with ongoing knowledge from their findings.

"Nowadays my colleagues and I are focusing on studying the war influence on Ukrainian society at different levels – institutional, group and individual. I am also proud to be a part of the research team investigating Ukrainian refugees' experience in Norway. This way we contribute to the support of Ukraine and Ukrainians abroad," says Deineko.

Head Of Research for International Studies and Migration at NIBR, Kristian Rose Tronstad, is happy to have Oleksandra Deineko in the research group.

"We are very happy and proud that Oleksandra has come to NIBR, and that she now receives support from Scholars at Risk," says Tronstad, and adds:

"Oleksandra is a very good sociologist, a good communicator, but also a daily reminder that refugees are like everyone else. They need to get back to everyday life."
