Responsibility in International Collaboration Agreements

Written agreements are important tools for securing responsibility in international cooperation.

An international collaboration agreement should describe the nature of the collaboration, clarify mutual rights and obligations and safeguard academic freedom and other fundamental ethical principles.

In research, collaboration agreements should regulate matters related to funding, confidentiality, intellectual property rights (IPR), data processing and open access research.

An assessment should also be made of the need for a confidentiality agreement prior to sharing information during the planning stages of an international collaboration. A confidentiality agreement will help ensure that sensitive and strategically important information is not disclosed to unauthorised persons or misused by potential partners.
