Science Ombud
The ombuds contribute to preventing conflicts, strengthening research integrity, and ensuring that research conducted at the university complies with applicable norms and regulations.
The Science Ombuds at OsloMet serve as an independent and neutral body offering guidance and support on matters related to research ethics and scientific integrity. The primary responsibility of the ombud is to prevent conflicts and act as an accessible mediator in issues concerning research ethics and research integrity. In addition, the role aims to strengthen the institution’s competence through meetings, training, and network collaboration across the university. The qualification requirements emphasize substantial research experience, sound ethical judgement, and solid knowledge of national regulations. By safeguarding academic freedom and ensuring compliance with established norms, the ombud contributes to maintaining the credibility of research and public trust.
The main task of a Science Ombud is to provide advice on questions related to research ethics and scientific integrity. The role functions as a supplement to the university’s ordinary quality assurance systems and helps reinforce the legitimacy of research, ensure academic freedom, and promote ethical reflection and integrity in research.
The responsibilities of the Science Ombuds can be grouped into four main areas:
-
Advisory Support and Mediation
The Science Ombud serves as an independent discussion partner whom employees may contact for advice on research ethics.
- Low‑threshold service: The role is intended as a low‑threshold service where dilemmas can be discussed confidentially.
- Neutral mediator: The ombud may act as a neutral and impartial mediator in difficult cases, for example between researchers or between PhD candidates and supervisors.
- Confidentiality: The ombud is bound by confidentiality and handles all inquiries in strict confidence. This means that the ombud does not discuss cases they are involved in with others, nor do they report these cases anywhere.
-
Prevention and Case Guidance
A central responsibility is to help resolve issues as early as possible and at the lowest possible level. This includes providing guidance in matters related to scientific misconduct.
-
Capacity Building and Training
The Science Ombud has an academic responsibility to contribute to the faculty’s work on research ethics. This includes:
- Serving as a resource person in the faculty’s efforts to promote research integrity through dialogue, courses, and training.
- Organizing annual meetings or dialogue meetings with academic units, institutes, and research groups to discuss ethical issues.
- Promoting reflection and awareness of ethical considerations in day‑to‑day research activities.
-
Networking and Professional Development
To ensure high quality in their work, the ombud participates in a broader professional community:
- OsloMet networks: The ombud collaborates with other Science Ombuds at the university and participates in the advisory group for the Forum for Research Ethics.
- National networks: The role involves cooperation with national networks and professional communities to stay informed.
- Regulatory updates: The ombud must remain continuously updated on relevant legislation, national guidelines, and procedures for research ethics.
