Q&A
The transition from shared stationary PCs to personal laptops (BYOD – Bring Your Own Device) has raised some concerns from certain instructors. Below is a selection of questions with answers that have arisen in this context.
Will the PC monitor, mouse, and keyboard be removed from the lectern?
Answer: No, we will not remove the PC monitor, mouse, and keyboard.
Can you charge the laptop in the classrooms?
Answer: Yes, all rooms will have charging capabilities via USB-C. There is also access to power in all lecterns if you bring your own charger.
Will notifications, such as email alerts, pop up during a lecture?
Answer: If you do not turn this off, notifications will appear. The easiest way is to click on the clock in the taskbar and select "Focus". This will prevent notifications from popping up.
Is there a backup if the laptop does not work?
Answer: We will have some backup laptops available in case of emergencies to ensure that teaching does not come to a halt.
Is it unsafe to use a personal laptop for teaching?
Answer: No, it is actually much safer to use your own laptop for teaching. You have much greater control over who has access to the laptop at any given time.
What if I use both a stationary and a laptop for teaching and switch between them?
Answer: Almost all classrooms at OsloMet have only one screen. If you switch between a stationary and a laptop, you will only be able to display one image at a time. If the stationary PC is removed, you will need to toggle between tabs/applications on the laptop. On Windows 11, it is also possible to use multiple desktops.
What should external lecturers who previously used the stationary PC do?
Answer: They must bring their own laptop. This needs to be communicated to all external lecturers. There will be some backup laptops available if any external lecturers forget to bring their own.
Can I have an assignment displayed on the screen for students to work on while simultaneously doing other things on my laptop, such as responding to emails?
Answer: Yes, you can use extended desktop. This allows the window with the assignment to be displayed on the screen while you work on other tasks, such as responding to emails, on your internal screen. The project will also explore options for "freezing" the image on the screen. There will also be a "picture mute" button on the control panel to make the screen go black if you need to prepare something that students should not see.
