Library instruction services

The library offers training sessions on various topics that can be adapted to different levels and prior knowledge.

The sessions will generally be held in Norwegian. English-language sessions may be possible upon request, depending on staff capacity.

Request library instruction

Course coordinators are welcome to request library sessions for students at bachelor’s, master’s and continuing education level. Contact the library by email: biblioteket@oslomet.no.

Checklist for your request  

  • Request the library session well in advance. The sessions are subject to availability.
  • Schedule the session at a time relevant for the students. Please note our recommendations for each topic below.
  • In addition to library instruction booked by course coordinators, we offer open courses on various topics (student.oslomet.no), open to all students.

    Content (minimum 45 minutes)

    Suitable for

    • Students unfamiliar with the library's services.
    • New students early in their first semester.
  • Study skills

    Held twice in the fall semester. Contact the Learning Support Centre studieverkstedet@oslomet.no for dates.

    Content (45–60 minutes)

    • Planning, reading, and writing strategies.

    Suitable for

    • First-year students.
  • Literature searching

    Level 1: Basic search techniques (45–180 minutes)

    • Searching for academic and research literature.
    • Choosing relevant search terms and using basic search techniques.
    • Searching in Oria and relevant search tools/databases for the desired subject area.

    Suitable for

    • Sessions should be held in connection with assignments/exams where students are expected to find literature beyond the course readings.

    Level 2: Advanced search techniques (45–180 minutes)

    • Systematic planning of searches (from research question to search strategy).
    • Documenting searches.

    Suitable for

    • Students who have completed Level 1 and are starting assignments requiring more extensive literature searches.
  • Sources and reference management

    Content (45–60 minutes)

    • Why use sources.
    • Source criticism.
    • Cheating and plagiarism.
    • Citing and referencing various sources in text.
    • Compiling a reference list according to your chosen reference style (for example APA, Vancouver, or IEEE).

    Suitable for

    • New students and as a refresher for master's and continuing education students starting a major assignment.
  • Reference management tools (Zotero or EndNote)

    Content (90–120 minutes)

    • Basic functions such as adding references to the reference management tool (manually/automatically), inserting citations into the text, and creating a reference list.
    • Backup.

    Suitable for

    • First-year students starting to write an assignment/course requirement.
    • Students with some previous experience in referencing and reference styles.
  • Academic writing

    Topic 1: Introduction to academic writing

    Held twice per semester. Contact the Learning Support Centre studieverkstedet@oslomet.no for dates.

    Content (45–60 minutes)

    • What is academic writing.
    • Writing exercises.
    • Language and structure.

    Suitable for

    • First-year students starting to write an assignment/course requirement.

    Topic 2: Introduction to research questions

    Held late autumn and early spring. Contact the Learning Support Centre studieverkstedet@oslomet.no for dates.

    Content (90 minutes)

    • Development and delimitation of your research question.

    Suitable for

    • Bachelor's and master's students with approved thesis’ topics.

    Topic 3: Introduction to discussion and argumentation

    Held twice each spring semester. Contact the Learning Support Centre studieverkstedet@oslomet.no for dates.

    Content (60 minutes)

    • What is discussion and argumentation.
    • Analyzing an example of a discussion.
    • Writing exercises related to your assignment.

    Suitable for

    • Bachelor's students in their second or third year and master's students.
  • Academic writing for students with Norwegian as a second language (N2)

    Theme 1: Introduction to academic writing for students with Norwegian as a second language

    Held twice during the autumn semester. Contact the Learning Support Centre studieverkstedet@oslomet.no for dates.

    Content (45–60 minutes)

    • Characteristics of academic writing in Norwegian.
    • Writing exercises.
    • Strategies for working with language.

    Suitable for

    • First-year students with N2 who are about to start writing an assignment/course requirement.

    Theme 2: Course sequence in academic writing for students with Norwegian as a second language

    Held once during the spring semester. Contact the Learning Support Centre studieverkstedet@oslomet.no for dates.

    Content (three sessions of 60–90 minutes each)

    • Reading and writing strategies, how to write in your own words.
    • Writing process, achieving “flow” in your text, how to work on improving your language.
    • Writing academically, discussing and arguing effectively.

    Suitable for

    • Students with N2 who find it challenging to study in Norwegian.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)

    Content

    This session is offered as a standalone course or may be combined with other sessions.
