Practical information for members of the assessment committee - LUI
Travel and Reimbursement
As a member of an evaluation committee, please note the following:
- Receipts and/or other documentation of expenses must be submitted for the payment of honorariums and expense reimbursements.
- Payment is made after the trial lecture and the defense have been conducted.
- Travel expense claims: Submit a travel expense claim
- No per diem allowance will be paid.
Travel and Accommodation
The faculty covers tickets to/from Oslo and hotel accommodation from the day before to the day after the defense.
First-class/business-class tickets will not be reimbursed if other tickets are available.
Transport
To the extent possible, we encourage external opponents to use public transport. Taxis can only be reimbursed when public transport is not possible. Between Oslo Airport and Oslo city center, the fastest option is the airport express train Flytoget (flytoget.no), which takes approximately 25 minutes to Oslo. The airport express train runs every 10 minutes between Oslo Airport and Oslo Central Station/Nationaltheatret. Nationaltheatret station is centrally located, with short walking distances to hotels and OsloMet.

Committee Dinner
It is customary for the committee to meet for dinner the evening before the defense as preparation for the event. The committee chair typically initiates this dinner. The PhD program covers the dinner expenses.
Trial Lecture
The trial lecture is an independent part of the doctoral examination and must address a specified topic not directly related to the dissertation.
The evaluation committee determines the trial lecture topic and must submit it to the responsible PhD advisor no later than 14 days before the trial lecture. The faculty ensures that the topic is communicated to the PhD candidate.
The PhD candidate will normally receive the trial lecture title 10 working days before it is to be held.
The chair of the defense also leads the trial lecture and facilitates its framework. The entire evaluation committee is expected to be present during the trial lecture.
The trial lecture should last 45 minutes. The purpose is to demonstrate the PhD candidate's ability to convey research-based knowledge. It should be structured so that it can be understood and appreciated by an audience with knowledge equivalent to that of advanced students in the field. Both the academic content and the candidate's ability to communicate will be weighted in the evaluation. The trial lecture must be "original."
The committee's evaluation of the trial lecture will be announced before the defense. A trial lecture must have significant deficiencies to be deemed unsatisfactory. If the trial lecture is not approved, the defense may still proceed, and a new trial lecture can be held once, on a new topic, within six months after the first attempt. The candidate will not be awarded the doctorate or diploma until the trial lecture is also approved.
The trial lecture and defense must be conducted in the dissertation's language unless otherwise agreed.
Public Defence
The defense is an academic discussion between the opponents and the candidate regarding the research questions, methodological, empirical, and theoretical basis, documentation, and presentation of the dissertation. Particular emphasis should be placed on testing the validity of the candidate’s main conclusions. The challenges raised by the opponents do not need to be limited to those mentioned in the committee's recommendation.
Opponents should strive to make the discussion accessible for those who have not read the dissertation or are unfamiliar with the field.
Structure
- The opponents divide the tasks among themselves. The defense should last no more than three hours, including a 15-minute break between the two opponents.
- The chair of the defense provides a brief overview of the dissertation submission, its evaluation, and the trial lecture.
- The first opponent presents the purpose and results of the research, placing the dissertation in a broader academic context. The first opponent then raises specific discussion points and critiques from the dissertation that the candidate must address. The first opponent has a total time allocation of 1.5 hours.
- The second opponent should use slightly less time than the first, with a standard of one (1) hour.
The chair of the defense may open the floor to the audience (ex auditorio) after the opponents have concluded their questioning. The chair then formally closes the defense.
Reception
There will be a brief reception after the defence, and the respective department is responsible for organizing it.
Suggested speaking order at receptions:
- The chair of the defense gives a brief speech on behalf of the faculty and presents the faculty’s gift to the candidate.
- The head of the department or their representative speaks on behalf of the department.
- The supervisor(s) give a speech.
- The candidate may speak
- Others
Doctoral Dinner
Some candidates choose to conclude the day of their defense with a doctoral dinner. It is the candidate's responsibility to invite guests to the dinner.
