Student evaluations by use of reference groups

Student evaluations by use of reference groups

Evaluation with reference groups can be arranged both at the study programme level and at the course level.

Reference groups can be arranged at the course level, for example in the form of a group composed of three/four student from a course that functions as a reference group for the students undertaking the course. The reference group can contribute to dialogue about the teaching/learning between students and person with course responsibility as a basis for making adjustments and improvements. The reference groups can make it easier for the students to present their views on the academic approach to the education during the semester.

It can be advantageous to use of reference groups at the course level as a supplement to other forms of evaluations. If reference groups are used as the only form of evaluation of a course, it is recommended that the reference group and the person with course responsibility regularly meet, and that the reference group is given a responsibility to regularly gather information from other students attending the course. A summary of the course evaluations with reference groups can be done at the end of the course so that all feedback throughout the course is included.
