Security when travelling abroad

template.back.to.overview Security when travelling abroad

Travelling abroad can present security challenges both in terms of information security and physical security.

Work trips and stays for work purposes in certain countries and regions require special security measures to protect information and individuals against undesirable incidents. This may concern incidents relating to intelligence activities, legal and cultural differences, or war and conflict.

Information security

When travelling to or staying in countries with which Norway does not cooperate on security policy issues, it is important to take precautions to ensure secure use of ICT equipment (laptop computers, tablets, mobile phones etc.). This is especially true for countries defined as high-risk countries by the Norwegian authorities. Which countries this applies to will vary over time. The Police Security Service (PST) publishes an annual national threat assessment (pst.no) that outlines the countries that pose the greatest threat to Norway. In addition, the Export Control Regulations refer to countries that are at war, threatened by war or in civil war as high-risk countries in terms of information security. Restrictions may also apply to the transfer of knowledge to countries subject to sanctions imposed by the UN or other supranational organisations of which Norway is a member.

See the guidelines for information security when travelling for more information about how to secure and protect information when travelling abroad. They include recommendations and requirements for actions to take before, during and after the trip. The IT department will set up computers ready for travel for staff and students who are going to visit or stay in high-risk countries. Physical security

For information about physical security while travelling, see OsloMet’s staff page about travels abroad and the travel pages at Sikresiden.no about preventive measures (sikresiden.no) and when something happens (sikresiden.no).
