template.back.to.overview How to apply for leave of absence

You may apply for leave of absence in certain cases.

In what cases may leave of absence be granted?

Leave of absence is defined as time-limited absence in relation to a student’s progress of study.

You will be granted leave of absence due to the following reasons:

  • pregnancy or child care
  • compulsory military service
  • illness
  • positions in student political bodies
  • other special reasons.

You may apply for a leave of absence for other reasons:

  • This requires that you have completed a minimum of 30 ECTS credits in the past academic year or at least 60 ECTS credits since your last leave of absence from your study programme.
  • If you apply for leave for other reasons, you may be granted leave for up to one year.

How to apply for leave of absence

Fill in the form for leave of absence (nettskjema.no) and include relevant documentation (medical certificate, letter summoning you to compulsory military service etc.). Section for Academic Affairs at your faculty will process the application. The application will be processed as soon as possible. However, in certain periods there may be a longer processing time. In such cases you will receive a provisional reply within one month after the application date.

  • When you finish your leave of absence, you are also responsible for notifying your faculty of when you are expected back, specified deadlines can occur. If you do not notify your faculty, you may have your admission to study revoked.
