Getting registered in Norway
What you need to do depends on factors such as your nationality, how long you will be staying and whether or not you intend to work. For more information about getting registered, please refer to the different topics below.

Immigration
If you are staying in Norway for more than three months, you must:
- EU/EEA citizens: register with the police or
- Non-EU/EEA citizens: apply for a student residence permit
Nordic students do not need to register with the police or apply for residence permit to live in Norway.

Depending on how long you are staying in Norway, you are either entitled to a temporary identity number (D-number) or a Norwegian identity number.

Tax deduction card
If you intend to work when you are in Norway, you will need to apply for a tax deduction card.
In order to get a tax deduction card you first need an employment contract or written offer of employment.
To apply for a tax deduction card, you must pre-book an appointment (sua.no) with the Service Centre for foreign workers.
In addition to a valid ID document, an application for a tax deduction card and an employment contract, you need a Norwegian Identity number (D-number or National ID number depending on how long you are staying in Norway). When you register a move to Norway, you can apply for a Norwegian Identity Number and a tax card at the same time.
