Bessel research award to Ramis Örlü

Professor Ramis Örlü at the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design has been awarded the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation in Germany.

The research award is given in recognition of the recipient’s overall scientific achievements and is awarded to internationally leading researchers for their outstanding contributions to research and teaching.

Ramis Örlü is involved in the work of the Green Energy Lab (oslomet.no), OsloMet’s laboratory for green energy research and education. Here, students are educated in various green energy sources, including wind, water and solar power.

“Warm congratulations to Ramis Örlü. This is a great recognition of what he has achieved,” says Laurence Habib, Dean of the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design.

Award and collaboration

The award winners receive prize money of EUR 60,000 and are also invited to carry out self-selected research projects in collaboration with academic colleagues in Germany.

The award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (humboldt-foundation.de) to Ramis Örlü is based on a nomination by Professor Dr Philipp Schlatter at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen–Nürnberg (Istm.tf.fau.de).

“This means a great deal to me, both professionally and personally. As an experimental turbulence researcher, it is a major recognition. The award gives me a unique opportunity to make use of the strong research infrastructure in Erlangen and Germany, and to further develop collaboration with colleagues there. At the same time, it lays the foundation for long-term and sustainable cooperation between myself, OsloMet and German universities,” says Ramis Örlü.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supports outstanding international researchers regardless of discipline or nationality, and maintains an international network based on scientific cooperation and trust.
