It will address both the positive and challenging aspects of leading a research project.

Maximum number of participants: 24.

Application deadline: Friday 2 October 2026

Target group

The course is aimed at researchers who are relatively new to the role of leading research projects and more experienced researchers who are interested in further developing their skills.

Participants must have a tenured position of minimum 50% at OsloMet and have completed a PhD. Experience from research projects involving several participants is an advantage.

Applicants who are already enrolled in other leadership programs at OsloMet will not be given priority.

Learning outcomes

The course will equipe participants with

  • skills in leading research projects in different phases
  • knowledge of tools that can support good leadership of research projects
  • skills in collaborating with internal and external stakeholders in project teams

Content

The course introduces the participants to

  • analytic and practical tools in leading the four phases of a research project: preparation, startup, operation, and closure
  • examples from different types of research projects and funding schemes, including collaborative research, internally funded projects, innovation, and product development
  • topics such as motivation, leadership, risk management, navigating the research system, development of research teams and communities, collaboration with R&D administration, collaboration with external partners, and planning for scientific and societal impact.

In one of the course modules, staff from the R&D administration will be invited to participate in a workshop together with the research project leaders, focusing on project development and management with an emphasis on teamwork. This module aims to raise awareness of factors influencing collaboration between administrative staff and researchers in the planning and implementation of funded research projects. It will facilitate experience sharing, identification of needs, clarification of roles, and exploration of how to develop collaborative relations between administration and researchers.

Method

The sessions are structured in thematic blocks that begin with short professional presentations. The participants are expected to take active part in discussions and group work, reflect on and share their experiences with the other participants.

Preparation

Participants will be invited to an individual meeting prior to the course to ensure that the course leaders are aware of participants’ needs and participants can attend well prepared.

Course leader

Rune Halvorsen, professor of social policy in the Department of Social Work, Child Welfare and Social Policy at OsloMet, has broad experience in leading externally funded research projects.
