Grant for research stays abroad
Who can apply?
PhDs, Postdoctoral candidates and researchers that are employed at the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD). PhD candidates must be admitted to one of our two PhD programs (PENG or PINS). For research stays in 2026 the priority is on PhD candidates and Postdoctoral fellows, but researchers can also apply. For research stays in 2027 (the call opens November 2026) researchers, Post-Doctoral and PhD candidates all have the same priority.
Please make sure that there are no other funding opportunities for the stay (like Research Council of Norway mobility stipend or similar). Funding from other sources will be deducted from the mobility grant.
You cannot apply for the international mobility grant if:
- You have previously received an international mobility grant from OsloMet.
- You are eligible to apply for an international mobility grant from the Research Council of Norway; in that case, you must use their scheme.
- You will have fewer than three months remaining of your PhD or Postdoctoral employment, after the end of the grant stay.
Application deadlines
There are two application deadlines in 2026:
- 1 June, for stays abroad between August and December 2026.
- 1 November, for stays abroad in 2027.
Purpose of the international mobility grant
The purpose of the international mobility grant is to support research activities abroad, that raise the quality of the doctoral project, help to establish and further develop collaboration with international research communities, and if relevant are of value to the candidate’s dissertation work.
Selection of host institution
The host institution and relevant research environment must be selected in consultation with your supervisor. The need for a stay abroad will normally be tied to academic development through research activities at a leading research group abroad. You should, at an early stage, check whether there are active exchange agreements between OsloMet and the host institution. Some institutions charge tuition fees, which in many cases will be waived if an exchange agreement is in place.
Duration of the stay
The grant covers stays abroad lasting a minimum of one month and a maximum of three months. Longer stays than three months are possible but must be funded by yourself or through other sources. You cannot cover cost for family members with the mobility grant.
Grant amount and covered expenses
Expenses covered:
- travel by the most economical means (one round-trip flight and public transport to and from the airport)
- documented additional living costs associated with the research stay abroad for the candidate, up to NOK 25,000 per month. No additional support is provided for accompanying family members.
- documented costs for visas and any tuition fees. If you apply for coverage of tuition fees, the amount must be clearly stated in the invitation letter from the host institution.
Expenses must be documented in the travel expense claim submitted after the stay.
Examples of expenses not covered:
- costs for teaching activities carried out by the grant recipient (i.e., if you teach)
- course fees for participation in courses, including PhD courses/subjects
- costs related to data collection
- support for activities such as courses/conferences, etc., outside the host institution
- costs for academic activity that is not directly related to your ongoing research project
How to apply
You will need to attach a letter of support from your main supervisor and a letter of invitation from the host institution.
