  1. Orientate the students

    Before the first lecture

Notice! First-year students do not have access to Canvas before start of the studies. Nettredaksjonen-hv@oslomet.no are helpful in sending out/publishing important information before the start of the course, including the first week of teaching.

Make sure that the syllabus/reading list is posted on the university’s web page. The list for the autumn semester must be published by July 1st / December 1st.

    Tips for the first lecture

Review the course description with the students, particularly focusing on explaining/discussing the learning outcomes of the course. Go through the syllabus/reading list, course requirements and the exam, as well as the course’s connection to the study programme which it is part of.

Inform the students about what they can expect you to give answers to and where you wish to communicate (e-mail, Canvas). Feel free to set up fixed times where you are available for contact in the office.

  2. Following up course requirements

Number of attempts and consequences of unapproved course requirements are outlined in the programme description and are legally binding. It is your responsibility to ensure that this is followed up.

The specific course requirements are to be found in the course description.

    • If a course has compulsory attendance as a work requirement, it is your responsibility make sure that absence is registered.
    • If the absence is to the extent that the student getting close to not getting the course requirement approved, you must contact the study administration for clarifying how to further follow up the student.
  3. Changes after start of the studies

In the event of changes in time/place for a lecture, room booker must be contacted.

    • Reserved rooms that are not being used must be cancelled.
    • Notify the students in Canvas

It is not allowed to deviate from what is stated in the course description during a course. In case of extraordinary issues, contact the study administration.

  4. Student evaluation

  5. Peer guidance/evaluation?

How about inviting a college to attend one of your lectures and get their feedback?

  6. Security and suitability

    • HSE-course: In some courses the students must pass an HSE-course before they can gain access to laboratories. The person with HSE-responsibility at the unit has responsibility for this.
    • Fire alarm: The teacher is responsible for evacuating the classroom.
    • If a student is acting in a threatening manner, see sikresiden.no about threats.
    • The person with course responsibility and/or teacher must undertake a suitability assessment.
