Students come to HiOA to let us help them prepare for the future. We are now preparing HiOA for the same future.

Why should we become a digital university?

Our students are digitally savvy. The working life and society to which we supply labour, knowledge and practice are digitally based. However, the institutions in the university and university college sector are lagging digitally. If HiOA is to be an attractive study and workplace, we must take our part in the development. 


Numerous digitisation projects have been going on at HiOA for several years. In 2015, the Digitisation programme for education was launched as a strategic effort to improve the digitising of study programmes and teaching. Today's digitisation is about using the necessary tools to achieve quality - in education, research, administration and business management.

Digital university 1.0

In order to take the digitisation of HiOA one step further, we launched a digitisation programme for the business in 2017. We need a solid foundation from which the digital university can rise, and we need to prioritise between the many digitisation initiatives taking place at HiOA. First of all, we need to get an overview of all our systems to ensure that they work together. This will help in adapting and improving the technical infrastructure for a more digital business. Secondly, we will need to adapt our organisational infrastructure: a digital everyday life involves interaction across the traditional organisational boarders, this is why we will establish cross-cutting working methods. Digitisation is also about taking part in a continuous process of development, and therefore we will establish procedures that equip the business with more efficient means of accepting change. The digitisation programmes are directed towards a common goal, the Digital University 1.0. This milestone will be reached July 1, 2019.

Lighthouse projects

In 2017, we have selected three lighthouse projects from the many ongoing digitisation initiatives at HiOA:

  1. Moocahuset: Digital teaching tools on the Open edX platform organised by the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Learning Centre and the library.
  2. ILD: Integrated learning arenas through digitisation at the Faculty of Education and International Studies.
  3. Digitisation of systems for practice reporting

Projects in the digitisation programme for education

The digitisation programme for education brings together the following projects:

  • Learning lab: a basic prerequisite for successful digitisation of education is to make sure the employees feel safe and possess good skills. The Learning Lab project aims to improve the employees’ competencies in using digital tools in teaching. Here you can try new forms of assessment and learning and find an arena for experience sharing. The Learning Lab also allows us to develop some common basic principles for digital assessment and learning at HiOA. Start-up August 2017.
  • Digital examination. About 60% of all school examinations and just under 90% of all written assignments will be digital as of spring 2017. We have recently signed a contract with Inspera as a system solution for the examination. From April 1, this will be used by everyone. We will establish an "examination factory" in Silurveien with tailored digital examination rooms and co-location with UiO.
  • Learning Platform - Canvas: HiOA will change its learning platform from Fronter to Canvas. This project aims to develop and introduce Canvas as a hub in the new digital learning environment at HiOA. Canvas opens for more innovative thinking when it comes to learning, teaching and interacting with the students, and will contain a range of integrated services. We will prepare for the transition in the spring of 2017 and then pilot the system at all faculties in the autumn. By 2018 everyone will have changed to Canvas.
  • Database for programme plans: This is something we have long missed. We will start with the subject plans and follow with the entire programme plans. The system has already been piloted at SAM and HF. The plan is to introduce the database in 2018.

Projects in the digitisation programme for the business

The digitisation programme for the business brings together the following projects:

  • Portfolio management: as we are investing heavily in digitisation we need a mechanism to ensure that we implement those projects that best meet our strategy and that we use our limited resources appropriately. Through portfolio management, we will achieve a more transparent decision-making process when it comes to determining which projects to initiate, and a better follow-up of these. To achieve this, there will be changes in the requirements of when and how to start projects at HiOA, and greater demands will be made for both the follow-up of the projects as well as the benefits we can gain from them. Research projects are not covered by the portfolio management. The model for the portfolio management will be created during spring 2017, and the introduction will start in the autumn pf the same year.
  • Digitisation strategy: This will guide HiOA towards its objectives in the digitisation process and assist in getting there.
  • Business architecture: The business architecture describes HiOA's core activities and the underlying tools for the day-to-day operations. We will focus on the connection between services, systems, work processes and flow of information. The purpose is to simplify the planning and introduction of initiatives that run across the business. This will contribute to delivering quality improvements and saving costs through increased cooperation and knowledge sharing.

Studentene våre er digitale. Arbeidslivet og samfunnet som vi leverer arbeidskraft, viten og praksis til, er digitale. Skal OsloMet være et attraktivt studiested og arbeidssted, må vi bli med på utviklingen.

Hvordan jobber vi med digitalisering av OsloMet?

Det har foregått en rekke digitaliseringsprosjekter på universitetet over mange år. Digitalisering i dag handler om å bruke de nødvendige virkemidlene for å oppnå kvalitet - i utdanninger, forskning og administrasjon og virksomhetsstyring.

Digitalisering er tverrgående og utfordrer tradisjonell ansvarsorganisering i en virksomhet, derfor har OsloMet tatt et strategisk grep om digitaliseringen og jobber kontinuerlig for at de ulike prosessene og initiativene som foregår er koblet sammen i en strategisk helhet som bidrar til at OsloMet når sine mål. OsloMet har etablert en porteføljestyringsmodell som hjelper oss å prioritere klarere blant de mange digitaliseringstiltakene som foregår. Vi får bedre oversikt over systemene våre og tilpasser den tekniske infrastrukturen til mer digital virksomhet. Vi tilpasser også den organisatoriske infrastrukturen vår: En digital hverdag innebærer samhandling på tvers av tradisjonelle organisatoriske linjer, og vi etablerer derfor tverrgående arbeidsformer. Digitalisering handler dessuten om å ta del i en kontinuerlig utvikling, og derfor vil vi bygge rutiner som ruster organisasjonen til å ta imot endring raskere.
