OsloMet's current system for plagiarism detection is Ouriginal, a text recognition program that can be used for plagiarism checks in Inspera and Canvas.

Ouriginal is a text recognition program. It has access to the open internet, our private database, and a shared Ouriginal database. When a document is uploaded to the database, Ouriginal will show how much of the document has text similarity with the available documents in the database. See also: Privacy Statement for Ouriginal (ansatt.oslomet.no).

Shared database for submissions

OsloMet shares submissions with Ouriginal's shared database. This means that we share excerpts of texts with universities and colleges in Norway that also uses Ouriginal, and that all submissions produced at OsloMet and checked for similarity will thus be available as sources for other educational institutions in Norway.

Employees have access to Ouriginal reports for subjects they are examiners or lecturers in. The reports are available via Inspera and Canvas, depending on which platform the tool is used in.

How to activate Ouriginal

Ouriginal is available for use on exam submissions in Inspera and for hand-ins in Canvas. In cases where the tool is activated, students' submissions will automatically be checked for text similarity and give the responsible faculty member/examiner access to the similarity report.

For text similarity checks on examination papers, Bachelor's theses, and Master's theses, it is primarily only the administrative employee(s) at the faculty who should order this. The administrative employee will normally activate that text recognition runs on all submissions in a given exam automatically. Note that this should not be ordered manually by the responsible faculty member or examiner, as there may be cases where submissions contain confidential information and thus should not be sent to the database.

For text similarity checks on hand-ins in Canvas, the instructor chooses which submissions/hand-ins to run control on.

What can I upload to Ouriginal?

Initially, only student submissions from students at OsloMet, such as general hand-ins, exam submissions, Bachelor's theses, and Master's theses should be uploaded to Ouriginal. Drafts of research articles, PhD dissertations, and similar should not be uploaded.

If you are unsure about what can be uploaded to Ouriginal, please contact plagiatkontroll@oslomet.no.

How to understand and read Ouriginal reports

It is important to emphasize that text similarity does not automatically equate to plagiarism/cheating. Ouriginal can detect text similarity, show where the similarity is found and how extensive it is, and then it is our task to determine whether it is a case of plagiarism or not.

What do I do when I suspect plagiarism?

If you find text similarity that may give rise to suspicion of cheating, you should contact the administration at your faculty. In collaboration with the administration, the report must be reviewed step by step, to assess whether the text similarity gives rise to suspicion of cheating. For more information on what can give rise to suspicion of cheating, see section 3.2 B) in the Guidelines for dealing with cheating and attempt at cheating in connection with an examination at OsloMet (student.oslomet.no).

If there is a suspicion of cheating, the routines outlined in the guidelines above are followed. OsloMet's rules for cheating are described here: Cheating (student.oslomet.no).
