Install and activate two-factor authentication

This guide shows how to set up two-factor authentication at OsloMet.

New phone or deleted the Authenticator app? Please reset your two-factor authentication.

  • Activate two-factor authentication

    Two-factor authentication for Microsoft 365 will be switched on at pre decided dates for all employees during the spring of 2021. Specific information will be sent you and your unit by email.

    1. Install the Microsoft Authenticator app

    Ready your phone for two-factor by installing the Microsoft Authenticator app.

    1. Use a PC or Mac. Go to: myaccount.microsoft.com
       
    2. Go to Security info (Sikkerhetsinformasjon). Choose UPDATE INFO.

    3. Select Add Method.

    4. Add the method "Authenticator app".

    5. Go to your phone: Open (or install) the app "Microsoft Authenticator". Then choose Next.

    6. Click next if Microsoft Authenticator is installed and ready to use.

    7. When a QR code is visible, please open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone.

      NB! It is not the specific QR code you see in the example here that is to be scanned.
    8. In the Microsoft Authenticator app: Go to settings. Choose Add Account.
       
    9. Select Work or school account.

       
    10. Then select scan QR code. If necessary, give the Authenticator app access to your camera.

       
    11. Go back to your web browser. Scan the QR code using your phone. Choose Next to complete the setup.

  • Reset two-factor authentication

    In order to install Microsoft Authenticator on a new device you must first reset your two-factor authentication.

    How to reset?

    1. Go to tofaktor.oslomet.no
    2. Log in using ID-porten (BankID, MinID++)
    3. Velg "Nullstill nå"
    4. Aktiver tofaktorautentisering på nytt - se oppsett for aktivering av tofaktorautentisering.

    If you don´t have BankID/MinID, and cannot login, please contact IT-servicedesk in person.

  • Two-factor authentication for external users (users without an OsloMet account)

    External users without an OsloMet-account need to activate two-factor authentication in order to access OsloMet Teams and files in Microsoft Office 365.

    Step 1:  

    In order to activate you need to install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone.

    Step 2:  

    When logging in the first time you will be greeted with a message to provide more information. Click Next in order to start the activation process.


     

    Step 3:  

    Then choose your preferred method of authentication. Choose «Mobile app» and "Receive notifications for verification". Click «Set up» to continue. (Using the option "Use verification code" is more cumbersome)

     

    Step 4:  

    Open the «Authenticator» app on your phone. Then add another account.

     

     

    Step 5:  

    Choose to add "Work or school account"


     

    Step 6:  

    Choose to scan QR code. If necessary give the app access to your camera.


     

    Step 7: 

    Scan the QR code on your screen. After the QR code is scanned, Click «Next» to continue.

    Step 8:

    The process now wants you to confirm your account. You´ll receive a confirmation message from the Authenticator app.  Click Done to complete the two-factor authentication.

    What is two-factor authentication?

    Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a security system that requires two distinct forms of identification in order to access something. With two-factor authentication, only you can access your account on a trusted device.

    When is two-factor authentication required?

    As of June 2021 two-factor authentication is needed to use Microsoft Office 365 and Remote Desktop (kontor.oslomet.no).

    How often is two-factor authentication needed?

    • Two-factor authentication will be mandatory at first login to Microsoft 365 on new IT equipment and always when using web browsers to access Microsoft systems. In installed Microsoft software (Word, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint etc.)  re-authentication using 2FA will be required after 90 days.
    • In order to use Microsoft Remote Desktop (RDP) for access to kontor.oslomet.no, patient journals etc. 2FA is mandatory on every login.
